The past few weeks have brought significant change to our way of life and we know that many of you are also concerned about the impact that the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic is having on the Texas racing industry.
The Texas Thoroughbred Association, the Texas Horsemen’s Partnership and the Texas Quarter Horse Association are working closely with the track operators and state officials to address the critical challenges that we are all facing.
We are focused on the well-being of our animal athletes and all of the individuals in our Texas horse community and we are actively weighing every possible option to provide support and assistance to horsemen throughout this difficult situation.
Over the past two weeks announcements have come from multiple sources and we want to make sure that you have all of the information available at this time.
Important announcements:
•The Thoroughbred meet at Sam Houston Race Park ended early, and as of today, the Quarter Horse meet has been canceled. The THP, TTA and TQHA worked with executives at SHRP to confirm that the backside will remain open for training for 30 days. All of the horses and backside personnel will be allowed to stay in place at the track, but no new horses will be accepted at this time. Industry leaders will continue to work with the track to determine the best possible solutions going forward.
•Lone Star Park announced that the acceptance of horses for the Thoroughbred meet will be delayed through April 3, 2020, and the track will reevaluate the situation at that time. Industry leadership will continue to work with the track on the timing for opening the backside.
•Lastly, industry leaders will continue to work for the safety of our animal athletes, the continuity of our business and all of the employees who keep Texas running. We look forward to a brighter future for the Texas horse industry.
Thank you.
