Solid Group of Fillies in the $75,000 Darby’s Daughter

Eight fillies will enter the starting gate in the first stakes of the season, the $75,000 Darby’s Daughter. The morning-line favorite is Tequila Kiss, owned by Indigo Racing, bred by TM Thoroughbred Racing LLC and trained by J. R. Caldwell.Jockey Chris Landeros returns to Sam Houston Race Park for the 2025 Thoroughbred meet and has the call aboard the daughter of Competitive Edge, who made two starts at Lone Star Park, with a victory in the Texas  Stallion Stakes Series -Pan Zareta Division, last June. She will break from post position seven at odds of 2-1

Hall of Fame Conditioner Steve Asmussen, who captured his 16th leading Sam Houston Race Park training title las April, will be represented by two quality Texas-bred fillies.  Douglas Scharbauer’s homebred Evening Edge did not compete in the series at Lone Star Park but was a pleasant surprise to her connections winning her debut on October 15 at Horseshoe Indianapolis. Erik Asmussen rode the dark bay filly, but is currently riding for his dad at Oaklawn Park, so she will be in the capable hands of last year’s top jockey Stewart ElliottThey were both honored as meet leaders in the 2024 Remington Park live racing season

“One run and a win; nothing wrong with that,” said Asmussen of the effort by Evening Edge. “Of course, I am very fortunate to have the continued success with Stewart.”

Asmussen will have another highly accomplished veteran in the saddle with DeShawn Parker named on this second entrant N2 Win Racing’s Stirring Up Dust.Scharbauer bred the filly by My Golden Song, who will make her third lifetime start. She exits a victory at Lone Star Park on July 7.

“She’s a nice filly, who just needed a little time off after Lone Star,” said Asmussen.

Last year, trainer Bret Calhoun won  the Darby’s Daughter with Mansfield Racing’s Too Much Kiki and hopes for a good effort on Saturday with Blingster, a Bradester filly purchased by Mansfield Racing for $26,000 at the 2023 Texas Thoroughbred Association Yearling Sale. She will make her fourth career start off a runner-up finish in a Maiden Special Weight on December 6. Jockey Jose Alvarez has the return call.

“She was immature in her first two races at Lone Star last summer, so we decided to wait and run her at Remington Park,” explained Calhoun. “She ran better that we expected off the layoff, as I didn’t have her as prepared as I would have liked.

“It means a great deal to me and my family to participate in this series,” acknowledged Asmussen. “Mr. Farish is one of several Texas breeders and owners who have played a very important role in my career. It will be good to see Ring Seeker return against Texas-breds on Saturday.”

Rocky Rock It is still a maiden for trainer Mindy Willis but cannot be ignored as the son of Too Much Bling, bred and owned by Star Bright Racing, who  hit the board in three of his four efforts at Remington Park.
