From American Racehorse:
Texas Chrome, last year’s Texas Champion 2-Year-Old Colt/Gelding, picked up another stakes victory on Saturday in the $100,000 Super Derby Prelude Stakes at Louisiana Downs. The victory in the 1 1/16-mile contest earned him a free berth in the Grade 3, $400,000 Super Derby on September 10.
Ridden by C.J. McMahon for trainer J.R. Caldwell and owner Keene Thoroughbreds LLC (Danny Keene), the Texas-bred colt by Grasshopper prevailed by a half-length over Grade 3 winner and odds on favorite Sharp Azteca. Texas Chrome was clocked in 1:43.83 and improved his record to 11-6-1-3 with earnings of $362,462.
Texas Chrome has four other stakes wins—the TTA Sales Futurity and Texas Stallion Stakes at Lone Star Park, Gold Rush Futurity at Arapahoe Park and Governor’s Cup Stakes at Zia Park. His stakes placings include a second in the Grade 3 Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows and a third in the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs.
Texas Chrome was bred by Craig Upham and sold to Keene for $10,000 at the 2014 Texas Summer Yearling Sale from the consignment of Upham and wife Sue Dowling’s Stoneview Farm. His sire Grasshopper formerly stood at Lane’s End Texas and has been relocated to Valor Farm in Pilot Point, Texas, for the 2017 breeding season.
