TRC VETERINARIANS
NOW MONITORING MORNING TRAINING SESSIONS
In an effort to reduce catastrophic injuries and improve horse and rider
safety, Texas Racing Commission Veterinarians recently began monitoring morning
training sessions for signs of unsoundness and/or lameness. This training
oversight assists Commission Veterinarians in identifying horses at risk of
injury due to possible pre-existing conditions by providing them an opportunity
to observe horses with:
1. Weight-on,
2. Before and after exercise, and
3. While on the track surface.
The results of this monitoring may result in a trainer being notified that a horse is either showing signs of unsoundness or lameness. Commission Veterinarians will be observing horses for signs or symptoms that a horse may be unsound (including, but not limited to any signs of abnormal stride or gait, illness, or injury) while working or training under saddle.
If a horse is observed to be unsound during on-track training, the Commission Veterinarian will give the trainer (or agent) an “Unsoundness Notification Form” notifying the trainer the horse will be placed on the Veterinarian’s List if the horse is observed to be unsound on any future day of training.
Commission Veterinarians will be observing horses for signs or symptoms of lameness while working or training under saddle. If a horse is observed to be lame, the Commission Veterinarian will give the trainer (or agent) a “Lameness Notification Form” notifying the trainer that either:
1. They have 72 hours to have their veterinarian examine the horse and contact the Commission Veterinarian with details regarding the condition of the horse. OR
2. The horse has been placed on the Veterinarian’s List with specific requirements for having the horse removed from the list.
