End Zone Athletics, Asmussen, Elliott Win Titles at LSP

Lone Star Park closed out its 48-date meet Sunday and awarded titles to its leading owner, trainer and jockey.
End Zone Athletics was the meet’s top owner with 40 wins, with Steve Asmussen ranking second in the category with 22. Asmussen was the meet’s leading trainer with 71 wins, with Karl Broberg of End Zone Athletics ranking second in the category with 54. Stewart Elliott won the riding title with 71 wins, with David Cabrera second in the standings with 55.
Handle on the 11-race closing-day card from all sources Sunday was $3.1 million. Attendance ontrack was 3,946, according to figures provided by Lone Star. In other stats courtesy of the Lone Star: There were 231 claims at the meet for $2.3 million in transactions among stables. The average field size was 7.37. Favorites won at a 39 percent clip. Elliott won five stakes at the meet.

The lone Thoroughbred racing in Texas for the remainder of the year will be during the summer mixed meet at Gillespie County Fair in Fredericksburg. The next major Thoroughbred meet in the state will be at Sam Houston Race Park in January. Lone Star will open a Quarter Horse meet on Sept. 17.
