The Texas Thoroughbred Association sponsors stakes races throughout the year in the Lone Star State, including the Clarence Scharbauer Jr. Texas Stallion Stakes Series (TSSS), a set of races progeny of nominated Texas-based stallions, and the Texas Thoroughbred Futurity, which offers two divisions in the spring for graduates of the Texas 2-Year-Old In-Training Sale and all Accredited Texas-bred horses.
The Texas Stallion Stakes Series features three sets of races, each split into two divisions (colts/geldings and fillies) for a purse of $65,000 per division. Each division has been named after a great Texas horse of the past.
The TSSS schedule for foals of kicks off at Lone Star Park with 2-year-olds going 5 furlongs. The series moves on to Retama Park in the early fall with 2-year-olds going 6 furlongs. The series concludes during the winter meet at Sam Houston Race Park with 3-year-olds going 6 furlongs.
Only progeny of nominated Texas stallions are eligible to be nominated to the TSSS, but the foals may be foaled outside of Texas.
Stallions can be nominated to the TSSS with a payment of their advertised stud fee or $1,500, whichever amount is greater.
2020 Stallion Nomination Form for 2023 Texas Stallion Stakes Series
Eligible foals must be nominated to the TSSS to participate. Owners can nominate for $100 by December 31 of the weanling year, or $500 by December 31 of the yearling year. After that, there is no other opportunity to nominate. Once nominated, the foal is eligible to all stakes in the TSSS for a $250 entry and $500 start fee per race. There are no late nominations, supplemental entries or sustaining payments.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR 2021 TEXAS THOROUGHBRED SALES FUTURITY

Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie
Any foal of 2019 that passes thorough the ring in either the 2019 Texas Summer Yearling and Mixed Sale, 2020 Texas Summer Yearling and Horses of Racing Age Sale or 2020 Texas Winter Mixed Sale, or is consigned to and subsequently passes through the ring at the 2021 Texas 2-Year-Old In Training Sale at Lone Star Park will become eligible for nomination and sustainment to the appropriate division of the 2021 Texas Thoroughbred Sales Futurity.
For every foal of 2019 that passes through the ring at the 2020 Texas Summer Yearling and Horses of Racing Aged Sale, or the 2020 Texas Winter Mixed Sale, each consignor and each buyer will receive a non-transferable berth into either division of the race. Any Thoroughbred foal of 2019 is eligible to be sold in the sales and nominated to the Futurity. Additional berths must be filled with an Accredited Texas-bred Thoroughbred foal of 2019 that did not pass through the ring at the 2019 Texas Summer Yearling and Texas Summer Yearling and Mixed Sale or the 2020 Texas Summer Yearling and Horses of Racing Age Sale or the 2020 Texas Winter Mixed Sale by the December 31, 2020 nomination deadline. Once a designated horse is nominated to fill a berth, ownership of that horse may be transferred with the horse still remaining eligible for the 2021 Texas Thoroughbred Sales Futurity. Total payment to start in the 2021 Texas Thoroughbred Sales Futurity shall be no less than $2,250 per horse.
Horses filling consignor berths and buyer berths must be designated at the time the December 31, 2020 nomination payment is made. Berths are non-transferable and must be filled with an Accredited Texas-bred foal of 2019. There are no provisions covering substitution of a designated horse.
Consignor berths are for the owner of the selling horse at the time of the sale. Buyer berths are for the purchaser of the selling horse at the time of sale.
